A spooky tale involving American Indians, a shaman of strange powers, a gullible warrior and a gigantic grizzly bear. Authentic Indian lore and animal life of he western prairies. Gray Bear, young warrior of the Missouris, is sent to learn the identity of the raiders who looted his home village on the Missouri River. In the woods at night he is attacked by a mysterious being with too many arms and legs to be human. His brother, an apprentice shaman, appears and treats his wound. In a cave the brothers find a starving man whom they can use as guide. Gray Bear acquires a faithful follower, a big and very brave dog. Soon they are captured by warriors of a kindred people who take them as guests to the big town at the center of the world. The shaman conjures up a frightful vision by mass hypnosis and Gray Bear trains for war with fierce members of his age group. Threatened by a rival shaman, the brothers must flee from the town but not before Gray Bear wins the love of the beautiful daughter of his host. He defeats his assigned executioner, a supposedly invincible giant champion warrior. On the far western prairie Gray Bear meets a huge Grizzly bear and claims it as his totem. The shaman finds the village of the raiders and 'sends his spirit' to steal back the sacred bundle of his people from a body on a burial scaffold He also steals a Bear Claw necklace for Gray Bear to wear. For this he is stricken with a mysterious sickness. In the homeward bound canoe he is near death but is restored to health by a mysterious incident in which the necklace is restored to its spirit owner. During a vigil, Gray Bear sees his faithful dog as a spirit wolf. He leads young men of the wolf clan in a successful attack against tribal enemies and becomes a war chief eligible to marry the princess of his dreams. The shaman entertains (terrifies) the members of his home village with mass hypnosis and becomes respected and honored by all.

A veteran commander is placed in the path of an invasion by an unknown enemy, but she is soon placed in an even more difficult position: assuming the role of an alien legendary hero, whose fate is predestined. How far will she go before she steps off the path that has been created for her to follow? Man and zor, once sworn enemies engaged in a mutual campaign of xenocide, now live side by side. The war is over, and Admiral Marais, the legendary 'Dark Wing' - both Angel of Death and Species Savior - is long dead, though some of his companions and participants in that great war still survive and have even chosen to live among the zor. Now a mystery from the past has become a threat to the present when an unholy menace jeopardizes both humans and zor alike. Whole space fleets have disappeared, with survivors stricken mad. And now man and zor alike must join forces to meet this adversary head on.… Editorial Reviews: 'In this gripping sequel to The Dark Wing, Hunt does a better job of depicting character and handling zor mythology and interspecies relations… it offers plenty of surprises.' --Publisher's Weekly 'What with the psychic-warrior complications, more Star Wars than Honor Harrington: some fans will relish the exploration of the zor culture.' -:Kirkus Reviews 'This fine sequel to Hunt's Dark Wing reads somewhat like a collaboration of David Weber and Orson Scott Card… It includes the implacable vuhl, a shape-changing, mind-controlling, insectoid enemy race that recalls the original foes of Card's Ender Wiggin… Imaginative twists include the facts that the human and zor quest team employs the telepathic assistance of Ch'ke'te's dead mate, Th'an'ya, and that some human POWs are finding out how to penetrate vuhl disguises. Gripping stuff that.' -Booklist 'The sequel to The Dark Wing combines military sf and space opera to produce a large-scale sf adventure that takes place in the depths of outer space, as well as within the minds of the combatants. A good choice for sf collections.' -Library Journal 'The novel [The Dark Wing] succeeded, did well, and now proves to be the first installment in a quest that may well prove science fiction's version of The Lord of the Rings… If you enjoyed Wing, you'll love Path.' -Analog Science Fiction and Fact

The Hero with an African Face: Mythic Wisdom of...

In this remarkable book, Clyde Ford restores to us the lost treasure of African mythology, bringing to life the ancient tales and showing why they matter so much to us today. African myths convey the perennial wisdom of humanity: the creation of the world, the hero's journey, our relationship with nature, death, and resurrection. From the Ashanti comes the moving account of the grief-stricken Kwasi Benefo's journey to the underworld to seek his beloved wives. From Uganda we learn of the legendary Kintu, who won the love of a goddess and created a nation from a handful of isolated clans. The Congo's epic hero Mwindo is the sacred warrior who shows us the path each person must travel to discover his true destiny. These and other important African myths show us the history of African Americans in a new light--as a hero's journey, a courageous passage to a hard-won victory. The Hero with an African Face enriches us all by restoring this vital tradition to the world.
