Integrated Nutrient Management for Rainfed Dire...

Climate change is a burning topic in global level which adversely affects agricultural production and livelihoods of our population through increased frequency of droughts and floods. By end of 21st century average global surface temperature may rise 1.4 to 5.80C. In tropical, yield of some crops would decrease with even minimal increases in temperature because they are near their maximum temperature tolerance. So, famine crop (finger millet) is best suited especially for drought stricken areas. It can lie dormant in the soil for weeks after receiving sudden rainfall, spring to life and ready for harvest in short period of time. It contains the most important amino acid (methionine) which is lacking in the diets of millions of the poor and popular among diabetic patients in all over the world due to its slow digestion indicates low blood sugar level. Regarding nutrient management, generally farmers apply chemical fertilizer alone in rainfed situation. But enriched form fertilizers will help to produce greater response. To overcome the problem of climate change, agronomic management practice (INM) will play a significant role to achieve sustainable productivity by farming society.

Considering the degree of urban livelihoods deterioration in the Sub Saharan African countries like Zimbabwe due to socio-economic and political factors, the study was undertaken to explore the roles of Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) on rebuilding sustainable urban livelihoods. This study was conducted in Mbare, one of the poverty stricken high density residential areas of Harare in Zimbabwe. Oxfam GB and ZimPro joint initiative s programmes and projects were the ones examined during the study.

This work aims to answer the following research question: To what extent does community-based ecotourism contribute to securing people's livelihoods and improving local standards of living in rural poverty-stricken areas around Three Parallel Rivers? To answer this question, the author analyses community-based ecotourism through the notions of community participation and social capital, advocated by both international and Chinese development experts as a form of self-empowerment and the basis of sustainable development, and integrated in particular ways in the new policy of New Socialist Countryside Construction the Chinese government initiated in 2006. Ecotourism understood in the particular Chinese terms that the author identifies in her research, has been the central agenda for developing rural communities in the minority areas of Yunnan Province. The book thus focusses on analysing the links between specific aspects of the larger New Socialist Countryside Contruction policy in ten villages in Yunnan Province where ecotourism is promoted, the forms of community participation practiced, and the larger political context that shapes community interest itself.

Corporate Social Responsibility in the Hospital...

As humans in the 21st Century, we operate in a fast-paced society. Moving from one deadline to another. Striving to achieve personal and work goals alike whilst setting more aggressive ones. It is for this very reason that we need to deliberately stop and set goals that are focused on enriching others lives. For a world that has every resource at its fingertips, it is a wonder how we still find ourselves in a poverty stricken society with very little or no focus on creating something sustainable to uplift individuals and communities. Large corporates need to change their thinking on corporate social responsibility. To a mindset that sees their company creating sustainable solutions for poverty stricken communities whilst still being able to sustain their company and its future.

This monograph provides valuable lessons in building disaster resilience for rural communities and beyond. With a focus on Florida, the authors present a comprehensive review of the current debates surrounding the study of resilience, from federal frameworks, state plans and local initiatives. They also review evaluation tools and feature first-hand accounts of county emergency managers as well as non-profit and community groups on key issues, including perspectives on vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children and farm workers.Readers will find insightful answers to such questions as: How can the concept of resilience be used as a framework to investigate the conditions that lead to stronger, more sustainable communities? What factors account for the variation across jurisdictions and geographic units in the ability to respond to and recover from a disaster? How does the recovery process impact the social, political and economic institutions of the stricken communities? How do communities, especially rural ones, collaborate with multiple stakeholders (local, regional, state, national) during the transition from recovery to resilience? Can the collaborative nature of disaster recovery help build resilient communities?.The primary audiences of this book are scholars in emergency and crisis management, planning and policy, disaster response and recovery, disaster sociology and environmental management and policy. This book can also be used as a textbook in graduate and advanced undergraduate programs / courses on disaster management, disaster studies, emergency and crisis management, environmental policy and management and public policy and administration.

Increasing Food Security through Agroforestry?

How to feed 9 billion people by 2050 without destroying the resource base upon which humankind depends? As a paradigm, sustainable intensification leads us the way toward agriculture of the 21st century. In future, agricultural production needs to be economically viable, socially acceptable, and cannot afford to undermine the ecological capacity of the landscape. Agroforestry is one production method, among many, that is proposed to enable hunger-stricken smallholders in developing countries "to produce more with less" and "more with less again" to achieve sustainable intensification. Agroforestry is recommended to be scaled-up as it has potential to maintain soil fertility and thereby reduce inorganic inputs that are often costly or inaccessible to smallholders. Agroforestry can also serve as a strategy to restore the ecological integrity of heavily degraded landscapes. It is capable to imitate basic ecological functions of forests, such as soil cover, moisture retention, and nutrient cycling, offering structural diversity for wildlife generalists, if well-designed. Yet, which trees are grown not only depends on farmers' basic needs and preferences, but also on national policies.
