Something stinks in Clovis, New Mexico and it's not just the dozens of dairies and numerous stockyards in the area. Government and corporate corruption have unique smells all their own. The mysterious deaths of two local community leaders, the sudden influx of outsiders, and local law enforcement becoming overly aggressive in every way, has the local citizenry stricken with confusion, fear and anxiety. Vincent Anthony D'Angelo, a U.S. Coast Guard veteran and a true fish out of water, hailing from the shores of Boggy Bayou in northwest Florida, arrives in Clovis, and none too soon. At the invitation of a former shipmate, Vince is brought in to help piece together the puzzle that has brought corruption and murder to a once peaceful and pleasant small town in eastern New Mexico. 1. Merciless attacks by an invincible alien force have left the New Republic reeling. Dozens of worlds have succumbed to occupation or annihilation, and even the Jedi Knights have tasted defeat. In these darkest of times, the noble Chewbacca is laid to rest, having died as heroically as he lived. A grief-stricken Han Solo is left to fit the pieces of his shattered soul back together before he loses everything: friends, family, and faith. Refusing help from Leia or Luke, Han becomes the loner he once was, seeking to escape the pain of his partner's death in adventure...and revenge. When he learns that an old friend from his smuggling days is operating as a mercenary for the enemy, he sets out to expose the traitor. But Han's investigation uncovers an even greater evil: a sinister conspiracy aimed at the very heart of the New Republic's will and ability to fight. The Whistler, Vol. 3, Hörbuch, Digital, 1, 353min

The Whistler was one of radio's top mystery programs airing from May 16, 1942 until September 22, 1955, sponsored by the Signal Oil Company. The Whistler was an ominous narrator who opened each episode with: "I am the Whistler, and I know many things, for I walk by night. I know many strange tales, many secrets hidden in the hearts of men and women who have stepped into the shadows. I know the nameless terrors of which they dare not speak." The opening dialog was heard over the echo of footsteps and a haunting signature 13-note theme, whistled each week by Dorothy Roberts. The stories followed an effective formula in which a person's criminal acts were typically undone by their own missteps. The Whistler narrated the story, often commenting directly upon the action in the manner of a Greek chorus, taunting the criminal from an omniscient perspective. One of the show's trademarks was the ironic twist endings that helped serve as a payoff for the listener. Bill Forman held the title role of host and narrator the longest. Others who portrayed the Whistler include Gale Gordon (later starring in I Love Lucy), Joseph Kearns (Mr. Wilson in television's Dennis the Menace), Marvin Miller (later starring on television as Michael Anthony in The Millionaire), Bill Johnstone (The Shadow on radio from 1938 to 1943), and Everett Clarke. The 12 half-hour episodes starring Bill Forman, included here with the date of broadcast, are: "Strange Sisters" (28 Jan 1946), "Panic" (4 Feb 1946), "Six Letter Word for Death" (11 Feb 1946), "Murder in Haste" (25 Feb 1946), "Terror Stricken" (8 Apr 1946), "Smart Boy" (15 Apr 1946), "Ambassador of Death" (16 Jun 1947), "Beyond Reasonable Doubt" (16 Jul 1947), "Whispered Verdict" (13 Aug 1947), "Curtain Call" (27 Aug 1947), "A Question of Murder" (4 Aug 1948), "Payment in Full" (1 Sept 1948). 1. Hoping It Might Be So brings together all of Kit Wright's previous collections for adults as well as three dozen new poems. The collection, first published in 2000, was described by Christina Patterson in the Sunday Times as 'funny and profoundly humane' and by Sophie Hannah in the PN Review as 'full of verve and energy, with a strong musical quality that makes you want to read on and hear more'. Sean O'Brien in the Times Literary Supplement described Kit Wright as 'a masterly yet modest poet' while Ruth Padel in the Independent on Sunday said that 'all through his work there is that poignancy, darkness, brush with despair, which marks great comic work.' The poet Anthony Wilson said that Wright 'can be funny, serious and moving, and sometimes all three in the space of a single poem'. Hoping It Might Be So is a rewarding collection from an interesting, prolific and lively poet whose poems range from ribald to grief-stricken, elegiac to rambunctious

Healing the Gospel

Description: Why did Jesus have to die? Was it to appease a wrathful God's demand for punishment? Does that mean Jesus died to save us from God? How could someone ever truly love or trust a God like that? How can that ever be called 'Good News'? It's questions like these that make so many people want to have nothing to do with Christianity. Healing the Gospel challenges the assumption that the Christian understanding of justice is rooted in a demand for violent punishment, and instead offers a radically different understanding of the gospel based on God's restorative justice. Connecting our own experiences of faith with the New Testament narrative, author Derek Flood shows us an understanding of the cross that not only reveals God's heart of grace, but also models our own way of Christ-like love. It's a vision of the gospel that exposes violence, rather than supporting it--a gospel rooted in love of enemies, rather than retribution. The result is a nonviolent understanding of the atonement that is not only thoroughly biblical, but will help people struggling with their faith to encounter grace. Endorsements: 'In this readable and balanced book, Flood gently--yet firmly and provocatively--challenges and enriches our understanding of the cross. He shows how the New Testament writers (and their earliest interpreters) present saving death as God's act of restorative rather than retributive justice, as an act of nonviolent, enemy-loving, reconciling, and healing love. Such amazing love beckons us to follow in the way of Jesus and justice. It is a book to read, mark, and digest.' --Michael J. Gorman, author of Apostle of the Crucified Lord 'Quietly, deftly, brilliantly, Flood takes on the story of the Christian doctrine of atonement, turns that story on its end, and then lays out before us a beauty almost beyond theology. Read it for yourself and see.' --Phyllis Tickle, author of The Great Emergence 'There has been a spate of books on atonement this past decade. None of them treat the salvific healing of Jesus's death better than this one. It is well-researched yet easy to read, full of insight, and sure to be a go-to book on the subject.' --Michael Hardin, author of The Jesus Driven Life 'Healing the Gospel brings the latest insights in biblical scholarship to the ongoing and lively atonement debate. Flood's work is biblical, straightforward, and accessible for the lay reader. He surveys the restorative justice of the wondrous cross with fresh eyes, engaging many head-scratching texts with utmost clarity. A great contribution!' --Brad Jersak, author of Stricken by God? 'In this provocative book, Flood exposes the grave deficiencies of the penal substitution model of atonement, pinpointing its shallow treatment of the depth and the gravity of sin . . . Armed with astute interpretations of Scripture, he focuses on the love of God and reinterprets justice as restorative . . . Finally, after centuries of suffering under a legal perception of atonement, Flood has shown us that the good news is truly good news!' --Sharon L. Baker, author of Razing Hell 'On a cresting wave of reaction against violent atonement theory, Healing the Gospel charts a sea-change course back to Jesus's ministry as a model of gracious restoration, moving far beyond the traditional, abusive contours of penal substitution as explanation of Christ's death . . . Jesus dies to show us God's enemy-love, which changes everything. A splendid, stirring, and essential book!' --Anthony Bartlett, author of Cross Purposes 'Anyone concerned about the connection between theology and violence in American society will welcome Flood's Healing the Gospel.
